Some recognition...

Looking Glass Photo is using my "High Waves" image as their facebook header.  I sent the image in a couple of weeks ago as they have been using their fans/customers photos for their header image.  Kind of fun to see it there!

Here's a link to their page if you like to take a look.

They're a great photography store in Berkeley.  I bought my very first DSLR there.  Very knowledgeable and helpful staff!

Elusive rain drop...

I tried to get a good shot of a rain drop in my back yard today...no go.  This isn't the first time I've tried to capture a good rain drop shot.  Just can't seem to get a good one.  But I'll keep trying.  I've seen some amazing macro shots of rain drops...and I want to capture one too!

I love this quote:

“Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.”

and that's me and photography!

Thank goodness for my 365 rule...

Well, it's a good thing I have that little rule about being able to take two images (and no more than two!) a week with either my iPhone or my Point & Shoot. I had an errand to do in San Bruno and on the way back I thought I'd stop at the Pacifica Pier and take my Day 28 image there. So, I get to the Pier...find perfect parking right in front...go to the trunk to take out my camera...check the control panel...what? I forgot to put the memory card back in last night...ack! And my extra memory card went kaput and I haven't replaced it...so...ACK!!

I thought I was screwed...but then I remembered my rule and took out my Point & Shoot. Let's see, what fun feature haven't I used yet...pinhole! As I'm walking up the steps to the Pier I see this little feather...in the perfect spot...and so nice and white. That's it! : )

HDR

I created my first HDR image today!  Yeah, I know, a little late to the party!!  Anyway, I learned quite a bit...like hard-edged subjects seem to work best.  The images that I took with trees in them didn't seem to work out...weird edges on the trees.  So, I think I might be trying this again soon!

Photography quote...

“You don’t take a photograph, you make it." - Ansel Adams

I love this quote...especially if you've ever seen how much post production "work" that Ansel did to his photographs before they were "finished."  Yes, you capture all you can in-camera...and then you make a piece of art after that!

Sometimes just go with the flow...

The image I took today for my 365 Challenge did not come out like I had intended.  I processed it and then just wasn't happy with it.  I worked on a different image and thought that I would have to suffice with that image...even though I wasn't thrilled with that one either.  Then I went back to my original image and tried a filter on it.  That was it!  The filter was the perfect thing that made this image into something terrific!  Sometimes you just have to go with the flow...

Cropping

Cropping vs non cropping...get the image right in the view finder!  Well, I've discovered that macros of flowers lend themselves better to a square format...so the last three macros of flowers I've done I've cropped square.  I've over the cropping issue...so there!

Cross Fingers

I submitted my "High Waves" image to a photography site for use in their facebook header.  They select one image a week to feature.  I got back an e-mail staying they will let me know "when" it is used...not "if" it's used...so hoping for the best.  That would be cool!!

Snowy Plovers

I have tried numerous times to get a good photo of the Snowy Plovers down at Ocean Beach.  I have never been successful...until today!  They weren't too shy and I was actually able to get pretty close...which was a good thing since I didn't have my telephoto lens (it's loaned out to my sister right now...who's leaving this weekend for a month in Africa...lucky duck!!), so I was using my 24-120mm lens.  The photo was taken about one hour after sunset and I love the reflection on the water!  Check out my web site...Donna L. Dodd Photographs, Galleries, 365 Challenge...Day 21 to see my Snowy Plovers!!

Hotel Rex & 81Bees

Today I had a photo shoot at the Hotel Rex.  It is part of a project that the 81Bees Photographic Collective is doing.  Thirteen photographers had two hours each to photograph one room over a 48 hour period.  Here's an iPhone image that I took...

It would help to know that the hotel names each room after an artist.  Our room was named after Alice B. Toklas...who happened to be the partner of Gertrude Stein...who happened to write a book called Tender Buttons.

We will have a showing of our work at the hotel on March 27...can't wait to see what creative ideas my fellow Bees came up with!

Tomorrow...

The photography group that I belong to, 81Bees, is currently taking photographs of a room at the Hotel Rex.  We each are allotted two hours to photograph anything in the room, with the total project spanning a 48 hour period.  A few rules such an no nudity (implied is ok), and nothing too conservative (What?  Well, we are in San Francisco!).  Then we'll have a show featuring our images at the hotel.  Tomorrow I'll be doing my two hour shoot.  Kind of an exciting project!

That's about right...

In 2012, 37% of the images in the US were captured using camera phones, but by 2015, that number is expected to be 50%.
Based on my own experience, I'd say that's about right...

Having fun...

Had fun today with my cheap little point & shoot camera.  I used a feature called reflections and then added two fun filters in PS.  Can't decide which image I like best...I think I like both!

deYoung Museum_Hockney Exhibit

Spent the day at the deYoung Museum.  I got FREE VIP tickets to the Hockney exhibit!  I LOVED that he has incorporated new technology into his work.  He embraced the iPad for creating some of his newer paintings.  A painter who isn't afraid to try new things...that isn't considered "traditional" painting!!

I know some photographer "snobs" that could take a cue from Hockney...film vs. digital being the subject!

12 FREE Hasselblad cameras...

...you just have to get to the moon!  There are 12 Hasselblad cameras on the surface of the moon.  They were left there after the moon landing to allow for the extra weight of the lunar rock samples to be brought back.

Sleeeep....zzzzz

I'm working on only two hours sleep from last night...not enough to get me through the day.  I feel accomplished that I got my image done.  Not a great image...but it's done!  Tomorrow's another day...and hopefully I'll crash early tonight and not wake up until morning!  Good night!!

Just hit pause sometimes....

I'm only in Day 13 of my 365 Challenge and I can already see an improvement in my images.  I'm getting VERY psych'ed!!

Two years ago I was getting discouraged.  I didn't think I was getting any better...I felt stagnate in my photography development.  I pretty much took 2013 off.  Didn't take many photos at all (except "snaps" with my iPhone...which I pretty much took every day!)...was wondering if I was going to get to where I wanted to be.  I knew what I liked, I knew what was good...but I didn't feel like I was there...at all!!  I felt like Antonio Salieri in the movie Amadeus...he knew what good music sounded like, but he just couldn't seem to produce it himself.

So I spent 2013 looking at photography.  All kinds of photography, but especially styles that I wanted to emulate...to pick and choose pieces from different styles and incorporate those things into my own unique style.

Now I can't wait to see what my 365 image will look like.  I'm hoping it will "blow away" those images I'm producing right now!!

Keeping some ideas available for emergencies!!

I had my camera with me the whole day but didn't see anything that I wanted to "capture."  And then I found out early afternoon that my husband's sister and daughter we coming over in the late afternoon/early evening.  So I had to pull one of my ideas out and try it and get something done quick.  It worked!  Still on track for the 365 Challenge...whew!

"Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow." – Imogen Cunningham

I find this so true!

I can see this is going to be a "real" challenge

I knew taking this 365 Challenge was going to be a challenge and today it was...Day 10...only 355 days to go...yikes!

I had to let go of my original idea today...just wasn't panning out.  And then took a shot of a deco piece in the house that belonged to my mom and had nice lighting falling on it from the table lamp.  Yeah, got to get my game up and try something really challenging...still this might make a nice card?!?

White Balance Issue

On my Day 8 image I had a white balance issue.  No, I haven't looked in my manual yet to see if I can find out what went wrong...but I will.

The photo on the left is the image I took after setting the white balance...the one on the right I took using the Auto WB sunshine feature.  Both images where taken in raw and I just converted them to .jpg for posting here...no other processing done to either.  Any ideas?

What I've learned...

I've only been at this 365 Challenge for one week and this is what I've already learned...or became aware of...or re-learned...or something...

Yesterday I posted an image that I wasn't crazy about...because I had to post an image...right...for the challenge...

Today I posted an image (on my facebook page, Donna L. Dodd Photographs, where I'm posting all my images, daily) that was bad...I mean "What was I thinking??"  So I cropped the image, which helped, and reposted a side by side comparison...but still...

So, I've become aware that normally if I take a photo and don't like it I don't post it...but because I have to post an image a day I have to post "those" images too.  And when I'm in a hurry because I want to get going on my day...I have other things to do...that's when the "non-postable" images get posted.  Or maybe a better way to say it is not every daily image is a keeper.

So maybe that's one more thing I'm trying to accomplish with this challenge...more thought given to each image before I click which, hopefully, will result in more keepers, daily.

Here's what I'm talking about for today's image.  I didn't like the green tint on the cabinet door on the right...most likely a reflection off the walls...and I had originally intended to focus on the pile of TP but when I lined up the shot through the viewfinder I didn't accomplish that...the cropping did...but cropping is bad in that it throws away pixels...a no-no!

Still learning...and making mistakes!

I thought I had my Day 6 shot today...perfect!  Well, it wasn't.  I wish I had closed down my aperture just a little and had more of the petals in focus...ack!  Need to remember to take more variety in aperture settings, etc.  I usually do!!  There's always tomorrow!

Fish-eye Lens

I used my "fun" point & shoot camera again today for my Day 5 photo.  We took Molly down to the Embarcadero for a walk...a beautiful day in SF!  Thought I'd try to find something fun for today's shot.  I think I did?!?  Maybe I should make it Fish-eye Lens Sunday...or maybe that should be on Friday?

Branding

I've been working on a "branding" graphic to use.  I really want something that's "artsy" vs something that looks "business."  Here's two quick ideas...one artsy and one business.  What do you think?

New Visions_A photography show with the 81 Bees

I'll be taking part in a photography show with my photo group, 81Bees.  The show celebrates 75 years for the Photography Department at CCSF.  All the members in this group have attended photography classes at CCSF...the name comes from the Black and White Darkroom class, 81B.  It's at Rayko Photo Center starting on January 17, with an opening reception on January 23...come on down!

For the Love of Dog

In late October I was accepted into a project that was sponsored by the Richmond District Public Library that required each participate (20 out of 100 photographers were accepted) to record what was "happening" in the Richmond District.  The project was being lead my award-winning photo-journalist Fredrick Larson...so that was an added plus!!

We had approximately six weeks to come up with a story and document it through our photography.  I had never tried photo-journalism and just the thought of having to approach people and ask to take their photograph and then asking them personal questions started this introvert shaking...but a challenge to step out of my comfort zone!

Right away I thought of my dog, Molly's, trainer.  She's a third generation Richmond District resident and has been a dog trainer for many, many years...and Molly loves her, of course!

So, after four meetings through October, November & December and lots of time thinking, talking & photo-taking I had eight of my images used in a story that I called, "For the Love of Dog in the Richmond District."  Oh, and these images will also be archived in the SF Public Library for use in research.

365 Challenge

Post is copied from my Donna L. Dodd Photographs facebook page:

I'm giving myself the 365 Challenge for 2014. Which is, basically, taking a photograph every day this year! Well, actually, I pretty much do that already with my iPhone. So I guess what I'm challenging myself to do is take more photographs with my "serious" camera, which means carrying that camera around with me more...or going out and seeking more "serious" photographs, technically speaking!

So along with this challenge at least 5 out of 7 images each week have to be with my "big girl" camera (I totally stole this name from a professional photographer that calls his serious camera his "big boy" camera...shhhh!). Ok, having said all that here's my first image...using a point & shoot camera that I recently bought that has some fun features, such as fish eye, that I used with this photo. Just a fun shot for the first day! : )

Oh, and an additional challenge this year will be to do a daily blog entry...along with my daily images.
