I've been posting for two and one-half months now and it appears that I no one is looking at my I'm not sure what's going on...there must be a problem of some kind.  So, until I can take the time to figure it out I won't be posting.  Kind of a waste of time at this point!

Editing Images

I still feel like I'm not "getting it completely right" in editing my images.  Am I over editing?  Am I understanding what needs to be done?  I still feel like I have so much to learn.

Hotel Rex

Here's the card for our upcoming Hotel Rex show.  We're going to be getting some good publicity from this show so it's very exciting.  We have some really interesting images and the show should be great!

I was the only photographer that incorporated the fact that the room was called the Alice B. Toklas suite...who happened to be the partner of Gertrude Stein...who happened to write a book called Tender Buttons...and that explains my image!

Hotel Rex Show

The 81Bees show at the Hotel Rex is fast approaching.  Looks like we're going to get some great publicity about it too.  Opening Reception is Thurs., 3/27...will have more info next week.  Stay tuned!

Feel'in better!

Ok, so today's image is good!  I really like how it came out...except I couldn't convert it to B&W using my Nik software because I kept getting an error message and it would shut PS I had to use a PS B&W preset...which is ok...but it looked amazing using the other software.  So...even having that issue I still feel good about today's image.  An improvement over yesterday...for sure!

Felt kind of down today on my photography.  Not sure if I'm getting better...or worse?!?  The daily photo is a great idea, I think, but sometimes I feel like I rush it...just to get it done...instead of being thoughtful about what I'm trying to accomplish.  Need to think about this!

Hotel Rex...

The 81Bees next show is at the Hotel Rex...opening reception will be Thursday, March 27th from 6:30-9pm.  It looks like it's going to be one of our best shows!

I'm working on the placement of the images on the wall and then the hotel will be hanging for us.  There are some really awesome images!!

one day it's hard...the next day...easy-peasy

Yesterday took me forever to get a shot that I liked...and!  I'm not sure what goes right...or wrong...that makes it so hard one day and easy-peasy the next.  Just the way it goes I guess!

Interesting fact..."As on August 2013, Facebook users on an average upload 350 million photos daily and there are total 240 billion photos uploaded on Facebook."  And some of those are mine...

Crackers...or Fish Food

I tried something different today and did a whimsical image using fish crackers and some of my scrapbook supplies.  Not sure if it is a success...but it's done!

Commercial it is...

I feel that at least 90% of my images are commercial in nature...rather than what I call "gallery" art.  I'm always thinking about the decorative arts or how something would look on a greeting card, or some such thing.  Today's image would definitely fall into the commercial category...greeting card category.  Is that bad?

Today I took a photo of my husband's orchid.  He had asked me a few days ago why I hadn't used his orchid, which is bursting with blooms, as a subject.  So today was the day!  I've taken several images of this plant while it has been in bloom...but this one is the far!

I used the lighting under the kitchen counter and in the ceiling to light the seems to pop off the page from the lighting!

Tomorrow's another day...

Today's image didn't turn out the way I was tomorrow's another day.  I tried another shell image but I just couldn't get anything I liked.  A rather frustrating photo shoot today!

Monday, February 24, 2014

My image for today was graffiti art.  I've noticed this wall many times and it always looks so colorful and today I took an image of the three main subjects and added a painterly filter to each.  And now it's my header for my blog...going wild!

Shells...and HDR

I tried another HDR image today...of a shell.  I LOVE shells so I know I'll be doing more of those for my 365 Challenge.  I really like how the HDR image came out...very hyper-realistic and all about shape and favorite things!

Saturday, February 22, 2014

Day 53...I took an image today with my camera balanced on the backend of a canon and my focus on a "thingy" sticking up from the side.  I had to "google" it when I got home...and my best guess is that that "thingy" is where they put the gun powder.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend...looks like it's going to be wonderful weather here!

Stuff that falls out of trees...

I'm still working on my stuff that falls out of trees theme.  Shot another image today of stuff I picked up on my walk through the Presidio yesterday with Molly (my dog!).  I might just bump into a tree...or I'm always looking down now for stuff!

What happened!

I missed my first blog posting for this year yesterday...somehow?  And, I didn't post yesterday's image to my web site...what happened?  I posted yesterday's image to facebook...and then I must have got distracted...or something...cause it didn't happen...ack!  Oh well, onward...

I'm Wilting...

Every morning when I get up and walk into the bathroom the orchids that are on the window sill have a wonderful soft light on them. The window faces West and the sun is still on the other side of the house...the light is beautiful. I keep saying I'm going to capture this beauty...but the light changes so quickly I have to hurry. I took a few images of the "nice" orchid blossoms...but I really liked the back of a wilting one...and that's my image for today.

Saturday, February 15, 2014

Continuing my theme...stuff that falls out of trees...

Did my third image today from "the stuff that falls out of trees" theme.  Did two versions and now I'm not sure which one I like better!  Going back and forth...back and forth...still can't decide.  I'm leaning towards the closer version.  Just asked hubby and he feels the same way...had me clicking back and forth...back and forth.  Finally said he's leaning towards the closer image.  Ok, that makes two!

Art vs Commercial

In looking over my images that I've done so far this year there are definitely two categories that every image can go & commercial.  Yesterday's image was commercial...would look great on a calendar, greeting card, wall art.  Today's image goes under art...I can see this on a gallery wall.  In fact...I think I have a theme going (After the Storm) and yesterday's image is the second one for this theme.  I still have quite a few more objects left to photograph that can go under this body of work (objects that I collected while on a walk with Molly after our last rain storm...stuff that blows out of trees...and such!).

New Show in March at Hotel Rex

The 81Bees will be showing work at Hotel Rex in SF in March.  Thirteen of us had access to one hotel room for 48 hours and our resulting images will be shown at the hotel.  We'll be critiquing the images this Monday...can't wait to see all the creativity!

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

I "googled" photography facts and found this...According to statistics, at present, only 2 of 10 images taken with digital cameras are printed on paper.

12 FREE Hasselblad cameras just have to get to the moon! There are 12 Hasselblad cameras on the surface of the moon. They were left there after the moon landing to allow for the extra weight of the lunar rock samples to be brought back.

I got an e-mail from Rayko Photo Center yesterday that an image I'm currently showing there as part of the 81Bees, CCSF Photography Department, 75th Anniversary celebration sold!  Yay for me!!

Saturday, February 8, 2014

That makes me feel better...

Saw a post recently that said there's a saying for artists...something like..."you have to create ten images to get one good image."  In other words, every image that artist's create are not a masterpiece...and those nine "throwaway" images are just that...throwaways!  Now I feel better!

Sharing the Love...

I shared the love on the facebook page.  An image perfectly sized to be used as a facebook header.  Head on over and copy and save your copy now...

Thursday, February 6, 2014

I went out looking for puddles this afternoon for the Day 37 image.  As I was looking at a reflection in a puddle two guys came from behind me and walked by the puddle...casting a nice reflection with their yellow jacket and yellow hat!  But I was too slow and didn't get a shot!  I could have asked them to walk by again...but no, not me!  So I stalked them to the next puddle and got my shot!

A quote from one of my favorite photographers...

“Nothing happens when you sit at home. I always make it a point to carry a camera with me at all times…I just shoot at what interests me at that moment." – Elliott Erwitt

That's what I'm trying to do with my 365 Challenge!

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

I've decided that I'm an intuitive photographer.  When I fuss with the placement of objects in an image I'm never happy.  When I just place the object or throw out multiple items (if that's what I'm working on) my mind's eye must agree that it liked whatever happened and that's it...or else I try something else.  If I think too much about how the object is placed it never works.

Like my Day 35 image...a simple small yellow daisy...just one daisy.  There could have been many ways to place this flower...but I just placed it...didn't think about mind's eye must have liked what it saw...and that's it...done!

Another HDR...

Added another HDR image to my 365 Challenge today.  I really like creating these images.  I've always been attached to things with texture...and HDR just brings that to a whole new level!

January critique...

Well...I definitely have room for improvement based on my January images.  My critique is that I'm not very consistent with the quality of my this time.  Here's some info based on "clicks" via my facebook page.

I had ten images (out of 31) that had more than 100 clicks (views)...assuming that means those images where favorites...or interesting enough to view (Days 1, 2, 5, 8, 9, 11, 18, 25, 26, 27).

I had four images that had over 175 clicks (Days 2, 25, 18, order high to low).

And February didn't start out good!  Ack!  With my Day 1 image being a rush job...and just bad.  I feel like I did redeem myself with today's image (Day 2)...but again...need to work on consistency!!

Can't rush it!

Today I just wanted to get my photo done!  I was up very late last night and I'm tired today...and I just didn't feel like creating an image...but I did.  Not proud of it...but it's done!  I will do better tomorrow...I promise!

Some recognition...

Looking Glass Photo is using my "High Waves" image as their facebook header.  I sent the image in a couple of weeks ago as they have been using their fans/customers photos for their header image.  Kind of fun to see it there!

Here's a link to their page if you like to take a look.

They're a great photography store in Berkeley.  I bought my very first DSLR there.  Very knowledgeable and helpful staff!

Elusive rain drop...

I tried to get a good shot of a rain drop in my back yard go.  This isn't the first time I've tried to capture a good rain drop shot.  Just can't seem to get a good one.  But I'll keep trying.  I've seen some amazing macro shots of rain drops...and I want to capture one too!

I love this quote:

“Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.”
Winston Churchill

and that's me and photography!

Thank goodness for my 365 rule...

Well, it's a good thing I have that little rule about being able to take two images (and no more than two!) a week with either my iPhone or my Point & Shoot. I had an errand to do in San Bruno and on the way back I thought I'd stop at the Pacifica Pier and take my Day 28 image there. So, I get to the Pier...find perfect parking right in front...go to the trunk to take out my camera...check the control panel...what? I forgot to put the memory card back in last night...ack! And my extra memory card went kaput and I haven't replaced!!

I thought I was screwed...but then I remembered my rule and took out my Point & Shoot. Let's see, what fun feature haven't I used yet...pinhole! As I'm walking up the steps to the Pier I see this little the perfect spot...and so nice and white. That's it! : )

Monday, January 27, 2014

I created my first HDR image today!  Yeah, I know, a little late to the party!!  Anyway, I learned quite a hard-edged subjects seem to work best.  The images that I took with trees in them didn't seem to work out...weird edges on the trees.  So, I think I might be trying this again soon!

Photography quote...

“You don’t take a photograph, you make it." - Ansel Adams

I love this quote...especially if you've ever seen how much post production "work" that Ansel did to his photographs before they were "finished."  Yes, you capture all you can in-camera...and then you make a piece of art after that!

Sometimes just go with the flow...

The image I took today for my 365 Challenge did not come out like I had intended.  I processed it and then just wasn't happy with it.  I worked on a different image and thought that I would have to suffice with that image...even though I wasn't thrilled with that one either.  Then I went back to my original image and tried a filter on it.  That was it!  The filter was the perfect thing that made this image into something terrific!  Sometimes you just have to go with the flow...

Cropping vs non cropping...get the image right in the view finder!  Well, I've discovered that macros of flowers lend themselves better to a square the last three macros of flowers I've done I've cropped square.  I've over the cropping there!

Cross Fingers

I submitted my "High Waves" image to a photography site for use in their facebook header.  They select one image a week to feature.  I got back an e-mail staying they will let me know "when" it is used...not "if" it's hoping for the best.  That would be cool!!

Snowy Plovers

I have tried numerous times to get a good photo of the Snowy Plovers down at Ocean Beach.  I have never been successful...until today!  They weren't too shy and I was actually able to get pretty close...which was a good thing since I didn't have my telephoto lens (it's loaned out to my sister right now...who's leaving this weekend for a month in Africa...lucky duck!!), so I was using my 24-120mm lens.  The photo was taken about one hour after sunset and I love the reflection on the water!  Check out my web site...Donna L. Dodd Photographs, Galleries, 365 Challenge...Day 21 to see my Snowy Plovers!!

Hotel Rex & 81Bees

Today I had a photo shoot at the Hotel Rex.  It is part of a project that the 81Bees Photographic Collective is doing.  Thirteen photographers had two hours each to photograph one room over a 48 hour period.  Here's an iPhone image that I took...

It would help to know that the hotel names each room after an artist.  Our room was named after Alice B. Toklas...who happened to be the partner of Gertrude Stein...who happened to write a book called Tender Buttons.

We will have a showing of our work at the hotel on March 27...can't wait to see what creative ideas my fellow Bees came up with!

Sunday, January 19, 2014

The photography group that I belong to, 81Bees, is currently taking photographs of a room at the Hotel Rex.  We each are allotted two hours to photograph anything in the room, with the total project spanning a 48 hour period.  A few rules such an no nudity (implied is ok), and nothing too conservative (What?  Well, we are in San Francisco!).  Then we'll have a show featuring our images at the hotel.  Tomorrow I'll be doing my two hour shoot.  Kind of an exciting project!

Saturday, January 18, 2014

That's about right...

In 2012, 37% of the images in the US were captured using camera phones, but by 2015, that number is expected to be 50%.
Based on my own experience, I'd say that's about right...

Having fun...

Had fun today with my cheap little point & shoot camera.  I used a feature called reflections and then added two fun filters in PS.  Can't decide which image I like best...I think I like both!

deYoung Museum_Hockney Exhibit

Spent the day at the deYoung Museum.  I got FREE VIP tickets to the Hockney exhibit!  I LOVED that he has incorporated new technology into his work.  He embraced the iPad for creating some of his newer paintings.  A painter who isn't afraid to try new things...that isn't considered "traditional" painting!!

I know some photographer "snobs" that could take a cue from vs. digital being the subject!

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

I'm working on only two hours sleep from last night...not enough to get me through the day.  I feel accomplished that I got my image done.  Not a great image...but it's done!  Tomorrow's another day...and hopefully I'll crash early tonight and not wake up until morning!  Good night!!

Monday, January 13, 2014

Just hit pause sometimes....

I'm only in Day 13 of my 365 Challenge and I can already see an improvement in my images.  I'm getting VERY psych'ed!!

Two years ago I was getting discouraged.  I didn't think I was getting any better...I felt stagnate in my photography development.  I pretty much took 2013 off.  Didn't take many photos at all (except "snaps" with my iPhone...which I pretty much took every day!)...was wondering if I was going to get to where I wanted to be.  I knew what I liked, I knew what was good...but I didn't feel like I was all!!  I felt like Antonio Salieri in the movie Amadeus...he knew what good music sounded like, but he just couldn't seem to produce it himself.

So I spent 2013 looking at photography.  All kinds of photography, but especially styles that I wanted to pick and choose pieces from different styles and incorporate those things into my own unique style.

Now I can't wait to see what my 365 image will look like.  I'm hoping it will "blow away" those images I'm producing right now!!

Keeping some ideas available for emergencies!!

I had my camera with me the whole day but didn't see anything that I wanted to "capture."  And then I found out early afternoon that my husband's sister and daughter we coming over in the late afternoon/early evening.  So I had to pull one of my ideas out and try it and get something done quick.  It worked!  Still on track for the 365 Challenge...whew!

Another favorite quote...

"Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow." – Imogen Cunningham

I find this so true!

Friday, January 10, 2014

I can see this is going to be a "real" challenge

I knew taking this 365 Challenge was going to be a challenge and today it was...Day 10...only 355 days to go...yikes!

I had to let go of my original idea today...just wasn't panning out.  And then took a shot of a deco piece in the house that belonged to my mom and had nice lighting falling on it from the table lamp.  Yeah, got to get my game up and try something really challenging...still this might make a nice card?!?

White Balance Issue

On my Day 8 image I had a white balance issue.  No, I haven't looked in my manual yet to see if I can find out what went wrong...but I will.

The photo on the left is the image I took after setting the white balance...the one on the right I took using the Auto WB sunshine feature.  Both images where taken in raw and I just converted them to .jpg for posting other processing done to either.  Any ideas?

What I've learned...

I've only been at this 365 Challenge for one week and this is what I've already learned...or became aware of...or re-learned...or something...

Yesterday I posted an image that I wasn't crazy about...because I had to post an image...right...for the challenge...

Today I posted an image (on my facebook page, Donna L. Dodd Photographs, where I'm posting all my images, daily) that was bad...I mean "What was I thinking??"  So I cropped the image, which helped, and reposted a side by side comparison...but still...

So, I've become aware that normally if I take a photo and don't like it I don't post it...but because I have to post an image a day I have to post "those" images too.  And when I'm in a hurry because I want to get going on my day...I have other things to do...that's when the "non-postable" images get posted.  Or maybe a better way to say it is not every daily image is a keeper.

So maybe that's one more thing I'm trying to accomplish with this challenge...more thought given to each image before I click which, hopefully, will result in more keepers, daily.

Here's what I'm talking about for today's image.  I didn't like the green tint on the cabinet door on the right...most likely a reflection off the walls...and I had originally intended to focus on the pile of TP but when I lined up the shot through the viewfinder I didn't accomplish that...the cropping did...but cropping is bad in that it throws away pixels...a no-no!

Monday, January 6, 2014

Still learning...and making mistakes!

I thought I had my Day 6 shot today...perfect!  Well, it wasn't.  I wish I had closed down my aperture just a little and had more of the petals in focus...ack!  Need to remember to take more variety in aperture settings, etc.  I usually do!!  There's always tomorrow!

Sunday, January 5, 2014

Fish-eye Lens

I used my "fun" point & shoot camera again today for my Day 5 photo.  We took Molly down to the Embarcadero for a walk...a beautiful day in SF!  Thought I'd try to find something fun for today's shot.  I think I did?!?  Maybe I should make it Fish-eye Lens Sunday...or maybe that should be on Friday?

Saturday, January 4, 2014

I've been working on a "branding" graphic to use.  I really want something that's "artsy" vs something that looks "business."  Here's two quick artsy and one business.  What do you think?

New Visions_A photography show with the 81 Bees

I'll be taking part in a photography show with my photo group, 81Bees.  The show celebrates 75 years for the Photography Department at CCSF.  All the members in this group have attended photography classes at CCSF...the name comes from the Black and White Darkroom class, 81B.  It's at Rayko Photo Center starting on January 17, with an opening reception on January 23...come on down!

For the Love of Dog

In late October I was accepted into a project that was sponsored by the Richmond District Public Library that required each participate (20 out of 100 photographers were accepted) to record what was "happening" in the Richmond District.  The project was being lead my award-winning photo-journalist Fredrick that was an added plus!!

We had approximately six weeks to come up with a story and document it through our photography.  I had never tried photo-journalism and just the thought of having to approach people and ask to take their photograph and then asking them personal questions started this introvert shaking...but a challenge to step out of my comfort zone!

Right away I thought of my dog, Molly's, trainer.  She's a third generation Richmond District resident and has been a dog trainer for many, many years...and Molly loves her, of course!

So, after four meetings through October, November & December and lots of time thinking, talking & photo-taking I had eight of my images used in a story that I called, "For the Love of Dog in the Richmond District."  Oh, and these images will also be archived in the SF Public Library for use in research.

365 Challenge

Post is copied from my Donna L. Dodd Photographs facebook page:
I'm giving myself the 365 Challenge for 2014. Which is, basically, taking a photograph every day this year! Well, actually, I pretty much do that already with my iPhone. So I guess what I'm challenging myself to do is take more photographs with my "serious" camera, which means carrying that camera around with me more...or going out and seeking more "serious" photographs, technically speaking!

So along with this challenge at least 5 out of 7 images each week have to be with my "big girl" camera (I totally stole this name from a professional photographer that calls his serious camera his "big boy" camera...shhhh!). Ok, having said all that here's my first image...using a point & shoot camera that I recently bought that has some fun features, such as fish eye, that I used with this photo. Just a fun shot for the first day! : )
Oh, and an additional challenge this year will be to do a daily blog entry...along with my daily images.
