Wow...long time no see

ok...it's been a while since my last post...I will do better!  Finished the Zone System class...and I can see why people take this class more than once...very technical.  Even though I don't see myself continuing with film I'm glad I took the class.  I could also see how by-passing Advanced Black & White made a difference with my final images.  Those students that had taken that class produced a much better final portfolio than I did.

But on to what I really love...color images.  Recently, I was describing an image I had taken with black and white film and I was describing the image in color...until I realized what I was doing.  Just hit home that my mind thinks in color...not in values (black & white).

I really, REALLY need to be more consistent with producing images.  I need to make a pact with myself to produce one good image a day...I know it can be done.  Must have camera with me at all times and just do it!

Backyard

The last two days I've been in my backyard taking photographs.  The November light is always wonderful and I've been seeing so many interesting things...everyday things...things I might note in passing, but stopped to take note via my camera.  It's so true that you don't need to travel to find interesting images...just step outside your door.

Thought so...

Lane Wilson gave a wonderful talk in my zone system class yesterday.  The most important sentence he said that rang true to my ears was, "Your artistic creativity will only be as good as your technical knowledge."  I've been saying this to myself in so many words, which is why I'm continuing to struggle through this zone class.

He is an artist who has the technical knowledge to create what his mind-eye sees.  Check out his web site and feast on his beautiful images.  http://www.lanewilson.com/

Partaay at Calumet Photographic...Come see Multiple Exposures by Nish f21

Hey there's a partay at Calumet Photographic, 2001 Bryant Street (between 18th & 19th Streets), SF this Sunday (11/16) from 2-5 to celebrate Nish f21 gallery showing and to meet the photographers.  I hear there's going to be mimosa!  And...all of the participants in the show are donating a matted image for a drawing...so you could win some FREE art just for stopping by and hanging out.  Drawing is at 4pm and you need to be present to win.  I hope to see you there!

Just keep at it...

So...this Zone System class is really getting to me...I mean I'm really struggling with it.  Very technical...lots of testing...only DOING testing.  Personal ISO, Standard Printing Time, N Test, N+1 Test, N-1 test and more....yikes!  And our first portfolio critique is due to 2 weeks...yikes again!

So today I grabbed my digital camera and took some photos...yes, my digital camera.  Then I started to work in light room...forgetting that I had set a time to develop film from one of my tests...I was having so much fun in light room.  Is this a sign?

But I need to keep at it...I am going to keep at it.  Hopefully it will all fall into place...hopefully?

Photography Show...there's some hanging going on tomorrow

Tomorrow the Nish f21 photography group gets together to hang our images at Calumet Photographic.  Our images will be up for the whole month of October.  We're having a reception on Sunday, October 16 from 2-5 pm (changed from 3-5...we need more time to have fun!)...lots of food and wine.  There will be a drawing at 4pm and you could win some free art!  Hey, that sounds pretty good...right?  Each artist will be donating one matted image...and you could take one of them home if you stop by and hang out for the drawing.  I hope to see you there cause it will be hopp'in!

Zone System...or...Reconstructing My Brain

I'm taking the Zone System class at ccsf this semester.  So for someone who uses color as a big part of the composition in their images...this is going to be a challange.  I have a portfolio due in four weeks and every idea I've had so far has been tossed aside because of the color issue...black and white film is the mode of operation in the Zone System.  Yes, you read that right...film.  I had to buy a film camera for this class...got a good deal on a Nikon N4004, which will work nicely for this class and only cost me forty bucks!  Let's not even talk about how much money I had to spend on film and development chemicals...yikes!!

But I'm finding I don't think in black and white...I think I've always thought in color...love color.  Now I need to retrain my brain to think in light and shadow...which isn't a bad thing at all.  And I'm hoping that this class will force me to slow down a bit...do more thinking before I take the shot as it were.
